In Brazil, the notary office (cartório de notas) writes the public deed (escritura). You only own the home once the deed is recorded at the property registry (cartório de registro de imóveis), so make sure that step is done.
Many notaries in Brazil work in Portuguese only. Ask if they work with a certified translator.
